4 Tips for Customizing Your Engagement Session

When it comes to your engagement session, it’s really important that it’s just that…YOURS.

An engagement session is a great way to get used to being in front of a camera and taking direction from your photographer, but it’s also your chance to really showcase your relationship.

Are your pets a huge part of your life?

Do you love pizza?

Are cozy coffee-filled mornings at home your thing?

Did you meet at the same university?

These are all great ways to start customizing your session to really tell your story. And, no worries, it definitely doesn’t have to be complicated!

4 tips to customizing your engagement session

4 Tips for Customizing Your Engagement Session

1. Bring your pet

If your dog is a huge part of your life, then bring them! We love when our couples bring their pets and kicking off an engagement session with your loving four legged family member.

Pro Tip: Have a trusted friend or family member on hand to bring your pet to the session, take them home, or play with them when they aren’t modeling. This way we all can focus on the session and won’t be worried about your dog being in a car or pulling. We always want to ensure our four legged models stay safe and happy!

2. Pick a special location

Picking a location that feels like you and your partner can be as easy as choosing something urban or more nature-filled. We help our couples a ton with picking locations, and especially providing guidance on what locations are best to combine!

This can get as personal as you want.

Did you get engaged at your university? We did too! Let’s go there for your session.

Do you spend a lot of time with friends at a local brewery? That sounds like a perfect spot to kick off a shoot!

Are your weekends spent hiking through Brown County? We love it, let’s go.

3. Wear multiple outfits

We suggest at least (1) outfit change throughout your engagement session. In the off chance you’ve booked a shorter session, then one outfit is probably the best choice so you don’t spend too much of your session changing.

Our couples sometimes choose 1, 2, or even 3 outfits.

Each wardrobe change can set a different vibe for your session and we really like mixing it up with new outfits!

Our favorite combination is something a little cozy and casual mixed with an elegant and formal outfit!

4. Tell your story

We want to be extra clear here: less is more when it comes to bringing something to your engagement session. I do not recommend showing up with a huge bag of props you want to incorporate.

What I do recommend is considering bringing one thing that feels like you. Try bringing something like your favorite beer, your pet, Jimmy Johns (because you met there), or a bike because you both are competitive racers.

And remember, you don’t have to bring anything. This is your engagement session.

Do what you want to do!

I hope this gives you some creative ideas to customize your engagement session! These photos will be so fun to look back on and see what was really important to you both.

Adam and I did our engagement session at our college, Indiana University, which is where we started dating and got engaged! I love that our session will forever have that tribute to the special memories we made on our old campus!
