Welcome back to another episode of A Couple and Some Cameras! In today’s episode, we’re diving deep into the world of editorial and styled shoots, exploring how to plan and execute these creative endeavors. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or just starting, this episode is packed with insights and tips to help you plan your first editorial or styled shoot and level up your portfolio.

When planning an editorial or styled shoot, there are four key items to keep in mind:

  1. Vision is Everything: To embark on a successful editorial or styled shoot, you must begin with a concrete vision. This is your creative playground, so feel free to get imaginative. Your vision will serve as the guiding star, leading you through the entire process.
  1. Communication is key. One of the most crucial aspects of these shoots is communication. You’ll want to communicate extensively with all the involved vendors. Overcommunicate, if necessary! Keep the vision on track, ensure expectations and deliverables are clear, and make sure everyone knows their roles and responsibilities.
  1. Execution Matters: On the day of the shoot, treat it with the same level of professionalism as a wedding day. Arrive early, and maintain clear and concise communication with the team to ensure everything runs smoothly.
  1. Know Your Deliverables: Understand what is expected of you and the other vendors involved. Clear expectations are vital for a successful shoot.

Are you considering investing in your business development and portfolio by attending an editorial, content day, or styled shoot designed by another industry professional? We’ve got a few tips for you too!

  1. Ask to see a mood board prior to purchasing a ticket. You want to make sure the vision aligns with your brand.
  2. Look for wedding photographers you admire and would value learning from. See if they offer mentoring, coaching, and/or produce editorials, content days, or styled shoots that you can invest in.

One of our favorite coaching offerings is a completely unique and personalized experience: a 1:1 personalized workshop and styled shoot. We’ll work with you to produce styled shoots tailored to the specific needs of your brand and what you specifically need. This personalized approach helps photographers enhance their portfolios and skills. If this is something that you’d like to learn more about, be sure to apply for our coaching experience.
