S2 E1: Reflecting on 2021 and Looking Forward to 2022

Listen on your favorite place for podcasts: Spotify | Apple Podcast

How could it be the start of a new year and the start of a new podcast season without reflecting on 2021 and sharing what we’re most excited about for 2022?!

When we started 2021, we weren’t sure what would be in store for us. With 2020 having just ended and the pandemic still raging, it almost felt as if we shouldn’t even make goals or plans for 2021.

Why set yourself up for disappointment if things don’t go the way we hoped, right?

Luckily, we decided to push those thoughts aside a make some big things happen throughout 2021.

5 Biggest Wins of 2021

Adam Joined Our Company Full Time

We kicked 2021 off with a bang by Adam officially leaving his corporate job to work for our business full time starting January 1, 2021. This milestone was huge for us because it meant that our business had grown enough so that we could both work full time for ourselves. I remember back when we started our business, I had just graduated from IU’s Kelley School of Business and I remember one of the statistics that really stuck with me was that a very slim number of businesses make it to 5 years. And, even then, most businesses aren’t profitable until they reach their five year mark.

I’m not sure why that fact stuck with me out of everything else, but it just seemed so significant to me.

So, when that 5 year milestone rolled around and we both were able to work for our business full time while supporting our family…that was just huge to me. We learned a lot, both being self employed for an entire year and during a global pandemic. We learned that there is a lot of freedom in setting your own schedule, but with that freedom there is also the challenge that can creep up of working 24/7. We also learned how it can quickly feel like the floor is being pulled out from under you when you run in to tight periods in your business.

Launched Our Podcast

One of the biggest milestones of 2021 for us was finally launching our podcast! We have been talking about launching a podcast for the photography space for what feels like years. Starting a podcast is honestly so nerve wracking! We’ve been fully enjoying doing it together and are so excited for all of the ideas we have in store for this coming year.

Grew Our Team & New Brand

While the podcast may have been a big milestone for us in 2021, the biggest of all was the growth of our team and the decision to separate our business into two individual brands: Adam & Becca and A.R. Davis Media. This growth was huge and so exciting for us. If I’m being honest, it was also terrifying to make such a big decision. Making the choice to separate our brands gave our team the freedom to find their own individuality within A.R. Davis Media while allowing Adam and I to step into ourselves more through our Adam & Becca brand.

It’s so true that sometimes big growth can come from taking big leaps that are a little scary.
